Services for Guests With Disabilities

The Mount Washington Cog Railway prides itself on being a wonderful and fun experience for all. Below is an overview of our services for guests with disabilities. If you require additional assistance or more information, please do not hesitate to e-mail us at info@thecog.com or call 603-278-2259.

Mobility Impairments

Marshfield Base Station is fully accessible, with restrooms in the main and lower lobbies and an elevator providing access to both levels. However, our passenger coaches are historic in design, with three steps up to the boarding deck, narrow aisles and doorways. Mobility-impaired guests must be capable of transferring from their wheelchair– by themselves or with assistance from others in their party– to their assigned seat on the coach. If space is available on the coach, we will transport your folding wheelchair on the train, or we can provide one of ours for your use at the summit. We do offer seats toward the boarding end of our coaches if space is available– please call 603-278-2259 ahead of time.

Hearing Disabilities

Our three hour summit round trips are narrated on the up and down mountain legs. We offer a printed script and other written materials for our guests. Video and information in the Cog Railway Museum is captioned when necessary. Please visit the Ticket Office for printed materials.

Visual Disabilities

For guests with visual disabilities, we do offer a narrated tour of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, a script of the narration in large print, and a separate downloadable version of the narration available here. Please visit the Ticket Office for printed materials.

Speech Disabilities

Our employees are always easily available and accessible for guests to talk to and communicate with. For guests with speech disabilities, all public facing Cog Railway employees are equipped with pen and paper to help with communication. Please visit the Ticket Office for printed materials.

Service Animals

Guests with specially trained service animals are always welcome! As defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), “a service animal is a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person's disability.”

  1. Please be aware that the high elevation, shifting movement and sudden loud noises may have an effect on the animal. Always use your best judgment when bringing your service animal aboard.

  2. For the safety and comfort of our guests, staff and our train crews, pets or emotional support animals (ESA's) are not permitted on our passenger coaches. Emotional support animals are not included or protected under ADA.
