Wheelock School 4th Graders Take First Prize in New Hampshire Video Contest

Marshfield Station, New Hampshire, June 20th, 2014 - The Mount Washington Cog Railway, famous for climbing the highest peak in the Northeast, once again welcomed the 4th grade class from Wheelock Elementary school of Keene, NH on Monday, June 24, 2014. Mrs. Debbie Sawyer's students won the first place prize of a field trip to The Cog Railway with luxury transportation provided by Premier Coach in the 3rd Annual Class Act Video Contest, sponsored by the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism.

Students across the state were challenged to develop a creative one-minute video that informs visitors what New Hampshire has to offer. The winning class used the alphabet to demonstrate all there is to love about the "Granite State" in song.

The students took photos, listened to the Brakeman's educational tour and asked intriguing questions on the three-hour round trip up to the Summit of Mount Washington. At the top, they enjoyed the observatory deck, and the offerings of the new interactive weather museum, including the popular and interactive "Snow-cat" exhibit. On the ride down, they serenaded passengers with their musical creation, "The ABC's of New Hampshire" theme song for the winning video.

Mrs. Debbie Sawyer has also been awarded a prize of her own this year, the Exceptional Teacher's Award. Debbie was one of ten teachers in her district to receive this prestigious New Hampshire teaching award. When asked about her successes with the contest in the last two years as well as her own award, Debbie answers, " Each new group is as wonderful as the last. I am very fortunate to receive students from teachers who have worked so hard to not only give them skills but who also teach the kids how to be thoughtful and productive people." Debbie equally attributes her own and her students' successes to the supportive parents and encouraging principal. As it states in the African proverb "It takes a village to raise a child".
