About the Mount Washington Cog Railway

Cog Railway Museum Exhibits

Steeped in history, this marvel of 19th century technology and modern innovation is an exhilarating voyage through landscape and nature. The Mount Washington Cog Railway, a National Historic Engineering Landmark, is a "must do" for any visit to New England.

When you ride The Mount Washington Cog Railway, you're in for an unforgettable adventure. Magnificent scenery...efficient new biodiesel locomotives and the classic steam engine (generally scheduled early in the day)...combined with a spectacular climb up the highest mountain in the Northeast.

marshfield base station

The journey begins at Marshfield Base Station, located at 2700' above sea level. Browse the gift shop, have a bite to eat at the restaurant, visit the informative museum, and enjoy the great views before ascending the mountain.

train on the top

Once at the top, there is an option for photo opportunities, along with a visit to the Observatory Museum and the historic Tiptop House before the trip down. On a clear day, the view extends all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
